Disaster Brings the Scammers… says Carol

Wild fires are still burning in the Colorado Springs area. More than 32,000 people were evacuated. Hundreds of homes are gone. Scammers see this as the perfect time to appear, and they are doing just that!

Your BBB has received numerous phone calls and emails from peolpe saying they have received an automated phone call from various locations asking for donations. It said they would “help fund” the Red Cross. They never identified who they were. The only thing these scammers will help fund is their own pocket.

It’s difficult to believe that someone would do this to hurting people. Truth is, “sure, some unethical people would.”

Also, it’s difficult to believe that anyone will fall for these fraudulent calls. That’s true. However, some people want to help so badly they fall prey to these callers; that’s why the scammers keep making the calls.

What should you do? Disconnect immediately from these thieves whether it be by land line, cell phone or person appearing at your door. Send your gift to Red Cross, Care and Share, your church, or other places you know are legitimate and giving to the fire victims.

These fraudulent calls are just the beginning of the scams centered around the fires. As the fires die down, more unprincipled people will appear on the scene. Your BBB is ready to take your calls and answer any questions about companies or charities.

Make sure you don’t become a victim trying to help the fire victims.
