Con artists are taking advantage of consumers who would like to participate in the well-publicized Cash for Clunkers program offered by the U.S. government. It allows consumers to trade their old gas guzzlers for credit towards a new fuel-efficient car. The House has voted to extend the program and the Senate is predicted to do so later this week. In the meantime, your Better Business Bureau advises the public to do their homework before trying to cash in on a new car.

A local man received what he thought was a renewal bill for one of his favorite magazines. A check was mailed. Imagine the consumer’s surprise when he later read a letter from the publisher of the magazine stating that the invoice he received was not a legitimate offer.
